A Child's Light follows best practices, employing both pre-licensed and licensed therapists with trauma-informed perspectives. These professionals equip children with the resources and tools they need to reframe their traumatic experiences, turning them into lessons of the past, not burdens of the future.

Our founder, Jacqueline Finnan Hemmer, wholeheartedly believes in investing in our children, fostering a healthier and more stable society. Her commitment to this cause is so profound that she serves as an executive board member of A Child's Light, actively contributing to the charity's mission.

The work of A Child's Light is transformative: through early intervention and treatment, children are able to heal, cultivate positive self-esteem, enhance academic performance, and cease self-harm. Most significantly, the charity helps children eliminate the need for self-medication through alcohol and drugs, setting them on a path to a brighter, healthier future.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth: Ali Forney Center

Understanding the Crisis

LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness compared to their peers. Many face family rejection due to religious beliefs when they come out, leading them to run away or be thrown out of their homes. Faced with homophobic violence in shelters, many choose the streets, where their chances aren't good. Of the 1,700 homeless LGBTQ+ youth served by the Ali Forney Center, 90% have suffered traumatic experiences, leading to substance use disorders, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

The Impact of Support

When supported and protected, LGBTQ+ youth experience astounding transformations: improved self-esteem, pride in their identity, better self-care, and decreased high-risk behaviors. With their basic needs met, they can focus on more than survival and work toward educational and employment goals.

The Ali Forney Center provides more than housing — it offers stability, support, and comprehensive services to help LGBTQ+ homeless youth rebuild their lives and prepare for independence.

The Ali Forney Center provides emergency Housing Program offers a home-like experience with cozy apartments in Queens and Brooklyn, providing nightly home-cooked meals and six emergency housing sites with 66 beds. A waiting list of 200+ youth still have access to services at the Drop-In Center.

The Ali Forney Center  prepares youth for independence with workshops, courses, and individual counseling. Through the LEAP program, we offer TASC tutoring and NWRC readiness curriculums, with 77% of our transitional housing residents in school and 99% employed.

Transitional Housing Program (THP)

With 58 beds in shared apartments throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, youth can stay for up to two years while maintaining employment, continuing education, and preparing for independence. Each resident is paired with a LIFE Coach to guide them.
