Striped hand-crochet open cardigan in autumn stripes, a transitional layer from Fitkitty Culture

Your Closet Doesn't Need a Complete Fall Reset

Every year around this time, I find myself standing in front of my closet asking the same question:

What am I supposed to wear when it feels like fall in the morning and summer again by lunchtime?

Maybe you know the feeling. You put on a sweater because the morning air is cool, and by the afternoon, you are carrying it over your arm. Your summer clothes suddenly feel a little too summery, but it is far too warm for heavy sweaters, boots, and all the layers we associate with fall.

And even when your closet is full, you can still feel like you have nothing to wear.

I want to remind you of something: you do not need an entirely new wardrobe just because the season is changing.

You probably already own most of what you need. Sometimes, all it takes is one or two special pieces that help your summer favorites move into fall, and make you feel excited about getting dressed again.

I pulled together nine pieces from the Fitkitty closet that I believe can do exactly that. These are not pieces you wear once for a picture and then forget about. They are comfortable, versatile, full of personality, and easy to work into your real life.

Because I never want you to feel as though you need to become someone else for a new season. I just want to help you feel a little more like yourself when you walk out the door.

Here's How I Make This Season Easier

Start with lighter layers

You do not need your heaviest fall sweater yet. I look for breathable pieces I can put on in the morning and easily remove when the day warms up: a denim vest over a tee, a crochet cardigan over a tank, or a soft hoodie I can unzip throughout the day.

The best transitional layer is one that does not make the rest of your outfit fall apart when you take it off.

Let one piece change the feeling of the outfit

You do not need to dress in fall colors from head to toe. One piece in olive, deeper denim, crochet, or a beautifully washed fabric can make the entire outfit feel more seasonal.

Keep wearing the summer pieces you already love. Just give them one new partner.

Dress for your whole day

Before leaving the house, ask yourself: Will I still feel good in this outfit when I take the top layer off?

If the answer is yes, you have created a transitional outfit that works with your day rather than against it.

Victorian Muse Ruffle-Trim Denim Vest

Victorian Muse Ruffle-Trim Denim Vest with high collar and ruffle trim, a transitional layering piece from Fitkitty Culture

Some pieces make an outfit feel finished the moment you put them on. The Victorian Muse Ruffle-Trim Denim Vest is one of those pieces.

The high collar, romantic ruffle trim, and structured denim make even the simplest outfit feel special, yet it is surprisingly easy to wear. You can slip it over pieces you already own and immediately make the whole outfit feel more thoughtful.

How you can wear it now
Layer it over a white tank, a lightweight tee, or your favorite summer maxi dress. Add sandals or sneakers and let the vest bring structure to the softness of the outfit while your arms stay bare for warmer afternoons.

How you will wear it into fall
Add it over a fitted long-sleeve tee, a lightweight knit, or a slim turtleneck. Pair it with straight-leg jeans and ankle boots for an easy denim-on-denim look. You can also layer it over the Hello Sunshine Shirt when you want a little color peeking through.

My take: If you usually feel as though your jeans-and-tee outfits need "something," this is that something. You put it on, and suddenly the entire outfit looks intentional.

Striped Hand-Crochet Open Cardigan in Autumn Leaves

Striped hand-crochet open cardigan in warm autumn stripes, a breathable transitional layer from Fitkitty Culture

Crochet may be one of the best answers to transitional dressing because it gives you the feeling of a layer without the heaviness of a traditional sweater.

The open weave lets it breathe, while the hand-crocheted texture adds interest without making the outfit feel busy. This one is worked in thick yarn, so it reads as a real piece rather than something you threw on. And the Autumn Leaves stripe does the seasonal work for you before you have styled a single thing.

How you can wear it now
Throw it over a fitted tank with denim shorts or lightweight pants. Wear it open with the sleeves casually pushed up when the afternoon warms up.

It is also the perfect layer to bring along for the last beach days, outdoor dinners, or evenings when you know the temperature will drop as soon as the sun goes down.

How you will wear it into fall
Layer it over a fitted long-sleeve tee with wide-leg jeans or trousers. When the weather gets cooler, wear it beneath a denim jacket or over the Contrast Hem Denim Shift Dress.

My take: I love a piece that feels special but does not make getting dressed more complicated. This is the layer I would keep near the door and grab on my way out.

Contrast Hem Denim Shift Dress

Contrast hem denim shift dress in washed cobalt, an easy transitional dress from Fitkitty Culture

If you only take one thing from this list, make it this dress. It is the most versatile piece in the entire edit, and the reason is the fabric.

The denim is lightweight. That one detail changes everything, because it means you can put almost anything underneath it without the outfit getting bulky or stiff. A tank and sandals right now. A turtleneck with tights and boots in November. Same dress, opposite ends of the year.

It falls easily over the body without feeling tight or restrictive, so it stays comfortable on a warm day, and the contrast hem gives it personality instead of reading as another basic denim dress.

How you can wear it now
On its own with white sneakers, flat sandals, or clogs. Add a woven tote or simple crossbody bag, and you have a complete outfit in less than two minutes.

For a cooler morning, bring the Striped Hand-Crochet Open Cardigan and drape it over your shoulders until you need it.

How you will wear it into fall
Add a fitted long-sleeve tee or a slim turtleneck underneath, then tights and boots when the temperature really drops. Because the denim is light, none of that layering fights the dress or adds bulk.

On cooler days, add the crochet cardigan or the comfort-washed sweatshirt over the top and let the contrast hem peek out beneath it.

My take: This is exactly the kind of dress I love. Comfortable, flattering, and easy to transform depending on your shoes and layers.

Hello Sunshine Shirt

Hello Sunshine Shirt in washed blue lyocell and linen blend from Fitkitty Culture

Some clothes are about silhouette. Others are about how they make you feel.

The Hello Sunshine Shirt brings a little brightness into your day at exactly the time of year when the light begins to change and summer starts slipping away. A breezy lyocell and linen blend in washed blue, it moves the way you want a summer shirt to move and layers the way you need a fall shirt to layer.

How you can wear it now
With denim shorts, relaxed jeans, or lightweight pants. Roll the sleeves, add sneakers or sandals, and you have that easy Saturday feeling, even when it is not Saturday.

How you will wear it into fall
Let it become your favorite base layer. Wear it under the Victorian Muse Ruffle-Trim Denim Vest or beneath the Sketchbook Embroidered Zip Hoodie in Olive. A little reminder you get to carry with you, tucked under a fall layer.

My take: Sometimes what we wear can shift our energy. I love the idea of carrying a little sunshine with you as the days begin to get shorter.

Crew Neck Comfort Washed Sweatshirt

Crew neck comfort washed oversized sweatshirt with ribbed cuffs from Fitkitty Culture

A beautifully comfort-washed crew neck is a year-round wardrobe piece, no matter what the calendar says.

Its softness and lived-in character make it ideal for the weeks when mornings feel cool but afternoons are still warm. Garment-washed for that vintage finish, with ribbed trim and a relaxed fit, it has enough weight to keep you comfortable without the bulk of a heavy winter sweatshirt.

How you can wear it now
With bike shorts, denim shorts, or a lightweight summer skirt. Push the sleeves up and let the contrast between the relaxed sweatshirt and the lighter bottom make the outfit feel intentional.

How you will wear it into fall
With straight-leg or wide-leg jeans and sneakers. Try a small front tuck to create shape, or layer it over a collared shirt and let the collar sit neatly above the neckline. For extra structure, add the Victorian Muse Denim Vest on top.

My take: You know the sweatshirt you instinctively reach for because it is soft, comfortable, and always feels right? This has that feeling.

Sketchbook Embroidered Zip Hoodie in Olive

Sketchbook embroidered zip hoodie in olive with floral, heart and star embroidery from Fitkitty Culture

Olive is one of those colors that quietly changes the season for you.

It feels earthy and grounded next to fall colors, yet it still works beautifully with white, cream, pale denim, and the lighter pieces you have been wearing all summer.

The colorful embroidery gives this hoodie so much more personality than a traditional zip-up. You get all the comfort you want, and it is still the piece that brings the whole outfit to life.

How you can wear it now
Partially zipped over a white or cream tank with denim shorts, relaxed jeans, or lightweight pants.

Bring it along for a cool morning walk, an outdoor dinner, a weekend away, or any day when you know the temperature will shift. The zipper gives you control, so you can adjust throughout the day instead of taking it on and off.

How you will wear it into fall
Over the Hello Sunshine Shirt with jeans and sneakers, or zipped up with the Victorian Muse Denim Vest layered over it when you need more warmth. The olive grounds the embroidery, so it coordinates easily with denim, rust, cream, and camel.

My take: This is comfort with personality. You get the ease of your favorite hoodie, but the embroidery makes it feel joyful and special.

Wild Luxe Quilted Leopard Vest

Wild Luxe quilted leopard print vest, a warm transitional layer from Fitkitty Culture

If you only add one new shape this season, make it a quilted vest.

It is the most useful piece in transitional dressing and the one most of us overlook. You get real warmth through your core for a cold morning, and bare arms so you are not peeling anything off by two in the afternoon. It solves the exact problem this season creates.

It also pairs more easily than you would expect. It sits comfortably next to denim, olive, cream, camel, and rust without competing with any of them.

How you can wear it now
Over a simple white tee with denim shorts or relaxed jeans. Let the vest do the work while everything underneath stays quiet.

How you will wear it into fall
Over the Contrast Hem Denim Shift Dress with tall boots, or on top of the Crew Neck Comfort Washed Sweatshirt when you want warmth and print together. It also works beautifully over the Hello Sunshine Shirt, with the collar and cuffs showing.

My take: Leopard is a neutral to me. A fun one. Once you start seeing it that way, it goes with far more than you would think, and you feel confident the second you put it on and look instantly put together!

Free Spirit Tiered Chambray Palazzo Pants

Free Spirit Tiered Chambray Palazzo Pants in soft denim, a wide leg transitional bottom from Fitkitty Culture

Everything above this point has been a layer. Here is the piece that gives all of them somewhere to go.

These are the pants that make a simple top look like you planned the whole outfit. Soft chambray with a tiered, wide leg that moves when you move, and an easy waist that does not dig in after lunch.

How you can wear it now
With a fitted tank and flat sandals while the afternoons are still warm. The volume in the leg does the styling for you, so the top can stay simple.

How you will wear it into fall
This is where they earn their place. Add the Crew Neck Comfort Washed Sweatshirt with a small front tuck, or the Striped Hand-Crochet Open Cardigan over a long sleeve. Swap sandals for boots or clean sneakers.

My take: Inclusive sizing has always mattered to me, and it is something we keep working to widen across more of the closet. These run S through 2XL. Comfortable enough for a travel day, interesting enough for dinner.

Lunar Essence Fleece Crew

Lunar Essence Fleece Crew Moon Tribe graphic sweatshirt from Fitkitty Culture

Every transitional wardrobe needs one piece that asks nothing of you.

The Lunar Essence Fleece Crew is that piece. Cozy, cosmic, and made for the women who move with the moon, it is the sweatshirt you reach for on cold mornings, journaling nights, and the days when comfort is the whole point.

How you can wear it now
Over bike shorts or leggings for a morning walk, or with denim shorts when the evening turns cool. It is the layer you keep in the car for exactly the moment you need it.

How you will wear it into fall
With the Free Spirit Palazzo Pants and sneakers, or layered under the Victorian Muse Denim Vest for structure. It also works beautifully under the crochet cardigan when you want texture without weight.

My take: This is the one our Tribe keeps coming back for, and I understand why. It goes up to 3XL, and that matters to me. Feeling good in what you are wearing should never depend on what size you take.

Three Easy Outfits I Would Put Together for You

If you were standing in front of me saying, "Jacquie, just tell me what to wear," these are the three outfits I would put together for you.

For a warm afternoon that turns into a cool evening

Start with the Contrast Hem Denim Shift Dress and flat sandals. Bring the Striped Hand-Crochet Open Cardigan to add when the sun begins to go down.

When the weather cools further, swap the sandals for ankle boots and trade the cardigan for the Wild Luxe Quilted Leopard Vest.

For errands, coffee, and everything in between

Pair the Lunar Essence Fleece Crew with the Free Spirit Tiered Chambray Palazzo Pants and sneakers. Tie the Sketchbook Embroidered Zip Hoodie in Olive around your waist or carry it for later.

It is genuinely comfortable, but it still looks like you made a choice. That is always the sweet spot.

For the day you want to feel especially pulled together

Wear the Hello Sunshine Shirt beneath the Victorian Muse Ruffle-Trim Denim Vest. Add wide-leg denim and a low boot or clean sneaker.

The vest gives the outfit structure, the denim keeps it wearable, and the cheerful shirt makes sure it still feels like you.

You Do Not Need to Reinvent Yourself for a New Season

A new season can create this quiet pressure to buy more, change everything, or become a completely different version of ourselves.

But you do not need a new fall identity. You do not need an entirely new closet. And you certainly do not need to wait until your body, your schedule, or your life looks different to enjoy getting dressed.

You deserve to feel good in your clothes right now.

That does not mean chasing every trend or buying pieces you will only wear once. It means choosing clothes that meet you where you are. Pieces that feel comfortable, bring you joy, and work with the life you are actually living.

Start with one piece that makes you smile. Before you buy it, think of three things already hanging in your closet that you could wear with it. If you can picture those outfits, you are not simply buying something new. You are giving the clothes you already own a new life.

Most importantly, choose the piece that feels like you.

Because personal style is not about becoming someone else. It is about reconnecting with the woman who has been there all along, and letting her take up a little more space.

Shop the Transitional Edit and find the piece that feels most like you.
